Medium bio

James Schlauch is the founder of San Diego AI, a senior-practitioner enterprise AI consulting practice based in San Diego County. He is a U.S. Army veteran with more than twelve years across AI, machine learning, and data science — public-sector experience spanning federal, state, local, and academic engagements; production work for Fortune-500 media and entertainment partners; and a recent extension into legal-agentic AI in regulated environments. He runs the practice on a six-engagements-per-year cap and refuses to write slide decks. Memos and working systems only.

Long bio

James Schlauch enlisted in the Nevada Army National Guard the day before his birthday in December 2002, deployed to Afghanistan in 2005, and volunteered as a door gunner mid-tour after his unit lost a helicopter. He came home, finished a theatre degree at the University of Nevada, Reno, and spent the next decade learning two crafts at once — directing actors at the National Comedy Theatre in San Diego, and building production AI, ML, and data-science systems for enterprise. The two crafts turn out to be the same craft: get a complicated cast of agents to perform reliably under live conditions, and make sure the audit trail holds up the morning after.

He is the founder of San Diego AI, a senior-practitioner consulting practice based in San Diego County. Twelve-plus years of enterprise AI work; public-sector experience across federal, state, local, and academic engagements; production AI delivered for Fortune-500 media and entertainment partners; recently extended into legal-agentic AI in regulated environments. The practice is capped at six engagements per year — structurally, not as marketing — and the deliverables are working systems and memos. No slide decks. He lives and works in San Diego County.

Everything in one place.

Sample topics

Three angles on the record.

Each links to a published essay in the same voice James brings to the stage or the studio. Treat each as a pitch starter.

Speaking format options

Pick the format that suits the room.

Each format runs in James's own voice — story-led, no slide deck unless the venue requires one, plain English on top of technical material.

45 minutes

Keynote

A single-thread argument with story-led framing. No deck unless the venue requires one. Built for festival, conference, or industry-track stages where the audience came to think.

15 to 30 minutes

Panel

A sharp position on a stated topic, defended in plain English. Best when the panel has a moderator who runs a tight clock and a co-panelist willing to disagree.

Half-day or full-day

Workshop

A working session for an executive team, an engineering team, or a board. Outcome is a one-page memo the room can take into its next decision, not a takeaways slide.

60 to 90 minutes

Podcast guest

Long-form is the format that suits the material. Comfortable in the operator-narrative register; happy to bring receipts on production AI, fractional executive work, or governance in regulated environments.

Direct contact
